I have also included the tracklist for the new album, Narrow Stairs, which is out 5/13 on Atlantic Records Tracklist01. Bixby Canyon Bridge02. I Will Possess Your Heart03. No Sunlight04. Cath…05. spring is approaching and so are the big name acts…

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Spring is almost here!  We’ve pushed our clocks ahead one hour, it’s getting warmer here in New York, the snow is gone (hopefully!), and the big time musicians are getting ready for their spring/summer tours.  Everyone from Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel to The Police and Jimmy Buffett have either started their tours or are about to hit the road.  Ticket prices will again be souring, but fans will come in droves to see their favorite acts.

I feel sad to think that some of these great artists only have a few more years left in them (take that with a grain of salt as musicians have been known to seriously overstay their welcome).   As these musicians wind down their careers, where are we classic rock fans supposed to turn? I know I can count on U2 for at least a few more years, but that’s about it.  Don’t get me wrong, I like the occasional rap, pop, and even “emo” song..but I just can’t get into those types of music as a genre.  My taste is classic rock and roll.  A band that can have you dancing in the aisles one song, blow you away with a guitar riff in another, and have you crying with a beautiful ballad in the encore.

I am going to have to start looking at new bands, probably unsigned bands, to get my classic rock and roll fix.  Over the next couple months, I will try to discover new bands in an attempt to  keep my rockin good times alive for years to come!

Music Biz Blues

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Cnet.com came out with a very interesting article recently about the state of the record industry and how it relates to digital music.  They covered everything from DRM to ad supported downloads, and rVibe plays a key role in a lot of the points they brought up.

1) Price flexibility.  The music biz wants to be able to set their own prices for music sold on the internet.  Currently, most songs are $.99 but some companies are starting to sell their songs for $.79 or less

rVibe sets every song on the software at the standard $.99 set price.  However, if you decide to steam a song in it’s entirety, it costs $.03 and the download price is lowered by that amount all the way down to $.78.  Also, unsigned artists act as their own record label and have the ability to set the price of their music at what ever price they want.

2) Ad Supported Downloads.  The record company hates ad supported download models and they will soon cease to exist.  The music industry is a lot more attracted to ad supported radio station-esque players.

rVibe allows users to download songs completely ad free.  Once you click to download a song, that track is yours and will never be altered.  rVibe also offers a radio station format that will play all of your tracks along with any of your friends tracks.  We offer the best of both worlds!

3) No more DRM!  DRM will become extinct in 2008 and you will be able to put music from any site onto any mp3 player.

rVibe already offers 100% DRM free music.

4) Social Networks.  Record companies are looking at social networking sites as their new marketing department.  They can track preferences of large demographics of customers in 1 network.

rVibe’s core is its extensive social network where fans and musicians alike can make friends, create groups, and share music with one another.

5) Bands will start to distribute their music online.  More big acts will follow Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails in their desire take control of their music sales and do it entirely online.

rVibe allows unsigned artist to put their music on the software, market their band, and charge a set price for all of their songs.  Bands will receive a check every month from rVibe with the profits from their music sales.

Animal Collective, a cult?

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

This is melissa my account wouldn’t let me log in so I am posting from seth’s for now. Found something really funny the other day regarding one of my favorite bands

(For those of you who aren’t huge nerds and check Pitchfork every three hours; you have to read this; hilarity)

by Paul Thompson and Amy Phillips

Anger! Depravity! Experimental pop music! Apparently it’s all there in droves at a live performance by the scariest band working today, Nickleback, I mean, Animal Collective.

After Animal Collective played Philadelphia’s Starlight Ballroom on Friday night, Sean Agnew of Philadelphia concert promoters R5 Productions received an e-mail from an angry mother of an attendee. He was kind enough to share it with us.

It reads:

You should be brought up on charges for what went down Saturday night, is this an underground cult you are running with Animal Collective?

My daughter and her friends were terrified, no security, no police, not even a show, music playing backwards and men trying to lure them away, only one door to exit out and no cab would come pick them up

because the location they gave did not exist, no one ever heard of the Polaris club or the address.

What kind of scheme are you running…..

I will find someone to listen and have your organization investigated, you endangered several young adults on Saturday night.

I hope your child never goes thru what hell you put ours thru,

I hope you rot in hell, or is that were your from!

“Underground cult?” “Music playing backwards”? “Only one door to exit out”? Sounds like every Animal Collective show we’ve ever been to! What’s the problem here again? At least there wasn’t any pot smoking!

Agnew’s response to the mother informed her that there were 12 R5 staff members, one police officer, and two “uniformed and armed licensed state security officers” stationed at the venue (indie kids can sure get rowdy!), which happens to have three exits, and had plenty of cabs out front.

He ended his e-mail with “We are not a cult and you have horrible grammar. Good luck on your journey with your child.”

Animal Collective dates follow the jump. BEWARE
